This is adults-only, from eighteen up. Everyone in your party needs to be 18 or older, and we ask for a valid government-issued photo ID at check-in, which we scan for our records. There's no exception for older teenagers travelling with parents, and no family suite held back for it.
The reason is size. We're a small house: ten suites and one villa, spread across 30 hectares of El Torón Reserve, just outside Mazunte on Camino Mermejita. A place this small only stays quiet if everyone's here for the same thing.
Who stays with us
Couples, mostly, and small groups of adult friends. Every one of our rooms has a king bed, and Villa Pentágonos is set up for two. Groups who want a house to themselves can reserve one whole:
- Casa Cuachalalá: four suites (Selva, Ceiba, Olas and Mar Azul), booked together.
- Casa Chicatana: four suites (the Master Suite Chicatana, Persianas, Chukum and El Árbol), booked together.
- Casa Guayacán: two suites (Guayacán and Copal), booked together.
Up to three rooms follow our standard reservation and cancellation policy. Book more than three and our group policy applies, so write to reservations first.
The rooms, briefly
We'd rather you choose a room for what's outside it than for its square footage. Here's how they differ.
| Room | House | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
| Villa Pentágonos | Casa Pentágonos | Alberto Kalach's clifftop villa: private infinity pool, shutters that open the bedroom and bathroom to the sea, outdoor shower |
| Master Suite Chicatana | Casa Chicatana | Ocean views, a TV room with sofa bed, a large bathroom |
| Suite Persianas | Casa Chicatana | Oceanfront, open shutters, private terrace |
| Suite Chukum | Casa Chicatana | Ocean views |
| Suite El Árbol | Casa Chicatana | Private terrace set into the trees |
| Suite Olas | Casa Cuachalalá | Private terrace, partial ocean views |
| Suite Ceiba | Casa Cuachalalá | Private terrace with a swing |
| Suite Selva | Casa Cuachalalá | Living area with an L-shaped sofa, garden setting |
| Suite Mar Azul | Casa Cuachalalá | Private terrace on the garden side |
| Suite Guayacán | Casa Guayacán | Terrace with a hammock, facing the hills |
| Suite Copal | Casa Guayacán | The quietest of the set, made for sleep |
If you want the sea in the room, look at Persianas, Chukum, the Master Suite Chicatana or the villa. If you'd rather wake up in the trees, Ceiba, El Árbol and Guayacán are the ones.
What the days look like
Breakfast is included with every stay. After that, most of our guests split the day between two places: the infinity pool, built into the cliffside rock, and our private beach inside El Torón Reserve. Beach towels are waiting for you; bring nothing but a book.
We don't have a spa, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we do have is massages and facials on request, either in your suite or in a private air-conditioned room at Casa Cuachalalá. Dinner is in our open-air dining spaces, cooked from local ingredients with Mexican flavours at the centre.
For the hours you want to leave the reserve, The Voyage Within is our experiences program, organised in five streams: Nurture, Explore, Create, Connect and Savor. Your concierge can build a day from any of them. Bicycles are free for guests, and San Agustinillo's beach break is the obvious place to ride to.
Before you book
The land does the work here. That also means the land sets some terms.
- Steps: we're on a hillside, with stone paths and stairs between every space and no elevators. If stairs are hard for you, tell us before you book.
- Wildlife: the reserve is protected land, and you'll share it with birds, reptiles and the occasional visitor on your terrace.
- Pets: adults-only doesn't mean pet-free. Dogs and cats are welcome in our pet-friendly rooms, up to two per room and 25 kg each, for USD $90 per pet per stay. Tell us when you book.
- Cash: we're a cash-free hotel. Bring a credit or debit card.
- Smoking: not on the premises. There's a designated area in front of the hotel.
Getting here
We're about 50 minutes by car from Bahías de Huatulco International Airport (HUX) and about an hour from Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM). Our concierge books private transfers from either one, and it's the easiest way to arrive after dark on a road you don't know.
Check-in is from 3:00 pm and check-out is at noon. If you land early, we'll hold your bags and do what we can on the room.
